Real story of "Take Care Of Maya"
In 2016, the Kowalski family, consisting of Jack and Beata, took their 10-year-old daughter Maya to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in Florida due to a severe abdominal pain crisis. The doctors at the hospital were not familiar with Maya's rare condition, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), which had been diagnosed years earlier by Dr. Anthony Kirkpatrick and treated in Mexico.
As Maya's mother, Beata, was a nurse and knew how to handle a crisis, she instructed the doctors at the hospital on which medications to use, but it did not end as expected. Maya's parents were accused of child medical abuse, and the child was placed under state custody without permission to see them.

The documentary
During the documentary, the Kowalski's version is presented to the public. In addition to their personal accounts of what happened, family photos and videos, the film also features interviews with Dr. Kirkpatrick and the lawyers who defended Jack and Beata Kowalski. Maya herself, now 17 years old, also speaks about her traumatic experience.
Only the testimonies given to the police by the doctor who accused the Kowalskis of child medical abuse are seen, as neither Dr. Sally Smith nor any other representative from Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital agreed to participate in the documentary.
