In 2022, young actor Austin Butler received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his impressive portrayal of Elvis Presley in the film Elvis. This role marked a significant departure from his earlier image as a blonde heartthrob in teen shows like Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana Season 2, and The Carrie Diaries. In fact, his transition began earlier with roles in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Dead Don’t Die, collaborating with renowned directors like Quentin Tarantino and Jim Jarmusch. Butler was also named one of IMDb's Top 10 Stars of 2022.
This year, with his roles in Dune: Part Two, Masters of the Air, and The Bikeriders, Butler has cemented his status as a globally recognized actor from the 90s generation. Today, he is a shining star amongst the Hollywood celebrities, and is one of the fastest-rising actors of recent years.

Austin Butler's look is a perfect mix of old-school charm and modern flair, allowing him to stand out uniquely across various roles. His old-school appeal is reminiscent of a classic Hollywood "golden boy": Complemented by his tall build, Butler sports blond hair, piercing blue eyes, and a handsome face that fits the traditional heartthrob mold perfectly. On the other hand, his modern vibe comes from his androgynous aura, marked by a touch of shyness and melancholy.
Austin also exudes a mix of calm and passion, capturing both the vibrancy of youth and the steadiness of a mature man. He doesn't fit neatly into the typical sunny leading man category nor into the intensely mysterious type, rather, he strikes a balance between the two, which naturally makes him more versatile for different roles.
In The Carrie Diaries, a female-led series, Austin Butler stood out even more in his male lead role due to his undeniable charm. At that time, he was just a pretty boy without substance. Media predicted him to be the next Robert Pattinson, but evidently, his path to transformation has been smoother compared to Pattinson, who had to endure through low-budget indie films.

With Elvis, (although the film received some harsh reviews) Butler's performance was universally praised by both audiences and industry insiders. Despite his appearance, Austin Butler doesn't much resemble Elvis Presley; he exudes a more vulnerable vibe, whereas Elvis seemed more majestic. But solid method acting turned that around. His performance earned him the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Before this, Butler dedicated two years to immersing himself in the role of Elvis, meticulously studying Elvis's various singing, speaking, and walking styles from different periods to ensure a lifelike performance and an accurate portrayal.
In Masters of the Air and The Bikeriders, Austin Butler continues to shine as a blend of idol and talent. Unlike many male stars who have risen to fame through action films or Marvel movies, Butler does not possess a heavily muscled physique and isn't the stereotypical tough guy. Instead, his appearance carries a touch of playboy charm, offering audiences a more nuanced and emotionally satisfying experience.

In fact, when portraying a soldier serving his country, he doesn't exude that overly righteous, rigid air—that's just too dull. And when playing a biker, he avoids coming off as too slick. He possesses a kind of charisma that isn't clichéd. Austin portrays a character who seems unreliable, but he successfully convinces the audience that this unreliability isn't due to any character flaw or frivolousness. Instead, it's rooted in his deep distrust of the world around him.

While Elvis proved the success of method acting, it was Dune: Part Two that truly amplified Butler's allure. He played Feyd-Rautha, the nephew of Baron Harkonnen, described in the original novel as "dark-haired" with a "round face and sullen eyes," but the film made significant changes to his appearance.
All members of the Harkonnen family have a peculiar appearance. They are depicted as bald, brutal, pallid demons with their biology corrupted by their toxic home planet Giedi Prime. The Baron Harkonnen is extremely obese, spending his days immersed in a nutrient bath, relying on advanced technology to maintain his mobility. He clearly represents a cunning and corpulent tyrant. His enforcer, Beast Rabban, is muscular but comes off as a somewhat dim-witted thug. Feyd-Rautha, introduced in Dune: Part Two, is much smaller but becomes the true leader of the Harkonnen family. So, where does that intense sense of oppression come from?
Villeneuve's casting of the handsome Butler as Feyd-Rautha resulted in a character far from typical good looks, embodying a naturally aggressive combatant. Feyd-Rautha's most notable feature is his prominent brow ridge, casting shadows over his eyes, enhancing his menacing aura. In the black and white footage, his facial expressions are often hard to make out, lending him an air of capriciousness.

In this film, Austin displays a complex form of masculinity. Clearly, his character Feyd-Rautha is the epitome of a man's man, boasting a robust, sculpted physique that exudes strength, yet lacks the traditional rugged body hair often associated with virility. He is formidable in combat, yet he doesn't rely on brute force; instead, he moves with the watchful, ready stance of a wild animal poised to strike. He displays the ferocity of a gladiatorial warrior and the endurance and stealth of a ninja.
His willpower is immense, and he dominates all those around him with a formidable presence. He is just one step away from becoming the supreme ruler, and his confidence in his own abilities fuels his arrogance. His arrogance and absolute coldness can be interpreted as a powerful force, compelling weaker characters to submit to him.

But his scenes involving passion are notably unique. Typically, such dominant characters are known to be womanizers or harsh towards women, and Feyd-Rautha does exhibit these traits. However, unlike Baron Harkonnen, who callously disposes of the women around him as mere objects, Feyd-Rautha initially displays a sense of restraint. Before Lady Margot arrives, he shows a celibate demeanor, absorbed by power and seemingly uninterested in women. He does kill his female followers, but his gaze lacks lustful intent, reinforcing his elevated stature. Yet, with Lady Margot, he exposes his vulnerabilities. It turns out he too can be manipulated and dominated by a woman, adding a complex layer to his persona. A purely strong person often lacks charisma because they can be difficult to approach. On the other hand, a strong person who shows vulnerabilities can evoke a sense of compassion and create dramatic tension. Of course, the premise of all this is his handsome appearance, which makes such sparks of desire all the more believable.

Austin is fortunate to have encountered a role that has truly unlocked his greater potential. His success is not accidental; every step of his transformation and breakthrough showcases his determination and talent. He stands out from other Hollywood stars primarily because of his ability to delve deep and portray the multifaceted nature of his characters. Unlike some actors who become famous through a single type of charm or stereotyped role, Austin showcases a broad spectrum of acting skills, effortlessly handling everything from teen idol dramas to profound historical figures. Moreover, his eclectic choice of roles and willingness to challenge himself set him apart from many of his contemporaries.
In collaborating with top directors and appearing in various types of films, Butler not only demonstrates his versatile acting skills but also reveals his depth and potential as an actor. Whether through method acting or breakthrough performances in sci-fi blockbusters, he has earned recognition from audiences and industry professionals alike through his strength and effort.
Austin Butler has secured a place in Hollywood and has become a global focus. His success story inspires more young actors to strive for excellence, and we look forward to his future endeavors. Austin Butler is writing his own legend with his unique charm and continually evolving acting skills.
