It was then that Merrick formed his biggest production company, Mer Bear Studios. A few years later in 2014 Merrick and Mer Bear Studios began working on his short film titled "Old Man Joe and the Devil". This 20 minute long motion picture was filmed in Bemidji, Minnesota and featured a cast and crew of only 4. This included Merrick's sister and two older cousins and his sister. The film centered around an Old Man by the name of Joe who had spent the last decade of his life searching for the girl he had been in love with sense preschool. When he finally finds her he is immediately rejected however his persistence pays of when he eventually wins her over. It is then revealed that Joe had been turned into and old man in preschool for being a bully. The devil then reappears and turns Joe back into his youthful self. This short film spawned several sequels including but not limited to the well known Christmas special "Old Man Joe's Christmas Vacation," as well as the famous Easter special "Old Man Joe's Easter Adventure". These films are heavily criticised for lazy writing and poor editing. Merrick McFarling eventually moved on from the Old Man Joe franchise and took a break film making for a few years. It was here where Merrick got his big break because he became good friends with the owner of EarthCoreStudios, Eddie Possehl.
