Mariel Sosa

Mariel Sosa (born 10 April 1996) is a Peruvian film director, producer, and screenwriter. She is best known for the award-winning documentary film Maxima. Sosa's work has been characterized for telling international stories about the human condition, and her projects have garnered numerous accolades. Sosa studied Film Production and Art History at the University of Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. She began her career working on the productions of music videos for top artists including Kendrick Lamar, Sam Smith and Ariana Grande. Her debut film, Phantasiaman, premiered at the National Talented Youth Film Festival where Sosa earned the 2017 Young Talent Award. Her next film, Maxima, was presented in competition at the 25th Austin Film Festival and was nominated for Best Documentary Film at the festival. That same year, the film went on to acquire various awards and nominations including the Best Documentary Film at the Newport Beach Film Festival, the Best Documentary Film at the Big Sky Film Festival and the Audience Prize at the American Documentary Film Festival. After her experience on this film, Sosa started focusing on stories that encircle women of color and unrepresented communities. In 2019, she directed and produced Kaxa Marca. The film was selected at the 19th DOC LA Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Cinematography. Additionally, Sosa was nominated for Best Female Director at the Prague International Film Festival. The following year, Say You Will (2020) won the Special Jury Prize for Documentary Film at the Bushwick Film Festival in New York and won Best Documentary Film at the Seattle Latino Film Festival. Say You Will also appeared in MovieMaker Magazine as part of the list of documentary films to watch of 2020. At present, Sosa has began the development for her first feature film, T.A.Y.A.
