Bill Spiller

Biography

Bill Spiller (1913-1988) was an African-American professional golfer who made history by leading the fight against the "Caucasian-only clause" instituted by the PGA Tour; a clause which banned non-white golfers from participating in its tournaments. The PGA Tour dropped the clause in 1961, thus allowing Americans of all nationality to compete in its tournaments. Spiller graduated from Wiley College with a bachelor's degree in Education.
