Rick Welch

Biography

Rick Welch began his life of movie making at the age of ten with a borrowed VHS camcorder. Throughout his formative years he discovered that he could communicate in various ways to his friends and family through the use of character development, camera angles and distinct uses of light and sound. As many directors will admit George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were tremendous influences on Rick's vision as a filmmaker. Star Wars, E.T., and Indiana Jones were his childhood favorites along with Richard Donner's The Goonies. In his teen years Rick became a Christian and soon began changing his story lines to accommodate his faith. Over the next twenty years Rick would create several small movies with family and friends and would sit down with them all in his living room and watch their creations together. This spawned a new style of film making for him and he created two production companies to feed his personal endeavors. Romans 10:17 Productions was born from a love of the Holy Bible. The 13 minute short film The Resurrection and the Life was the first major film effort using only the scripture verses as dialogue. This film he co-directed with Canissa Henn and plans to make two more films in 2017 and 2018 titled Only Begotten Son (a short film about the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus found in John 3:16) and The Wisdom and the Spirit (a short film about the life and death of the christian martyr Stephen found in the book Acts of the Apostles). In the spring of 2016 Rick sought out a screenwriter to assist him in creating an experimental Christian film about a serial killer who drowns women and a victim who was a Christian woman trying to overcome her fear of the water. Knowing that this would be an unusual film he sought unusual means to get his vision produced. After searching for local authors in Hendersonville, North Carolina he discovered the novel Ugly as Sin written by dark fiction author James Newman (Midnight Rain, Ugly as Sin, Odd Man Out, The Wicked). Upon reading the novel he quickly searched for him and discovered he had went to high school with his wife. After contacting her they met at a small coffee shop in downtown Hendersonville called Black Bear Coffee Shop and began working out the screenplay that led to the creation of Still Waters. It was during this time that Rick started his second production company Tacky Tie Films to steer his creative vision utilizing his faith in a an all new way but significantly different from his earlier approach of strictly biblical work. Shortly after the seventh and final draft of the script was completed by Newman, Rick assembled his cast and crew and began filming on July 14th, 2016 at over 5 lakes and several pools in and around Western North Carolina and upstate South Carolina. Filming wrapped in mid-September. Still Waters opened to the public at 7pm on October 14th, 2016 to a sold out crowd at the Carolina Cinemark in Asheville, North Carolina. The film would sell out 8 of the 12 shows premiering over two weekends. Because of the rapid fire style of film making and unique vision of "the Tacky Tie Style " production the DVD released on Halloween Day at 12:01 am. October 31st, 2016. Rick utilizes live broadcasts to connect the public to his cast and crew. Through these live discussions he has been able to create a unique way to create and enjoy the film making and film watching process. Rick Welch resides at his home in Hoopers Creek, North Carolina with his wife, Alice and 5 children and step-children. He has two grown daughters outside the home.
