Sumit was born and raised in Bangladesh's boisterous capital Dhaka. City Life, a docu-drama he shot entirely on a friend's handy-cam, earned him a place at the prestigious Berlinale Talents 2008 as an up-and-coming director. There, the likes of Andrzej Wajda, Stephen Daldry instilled a confidence in him. For the first time, he realized filmmakers are change-agents in the same way student politicians or grassroots inventors are.
Almost all his films portray aspects of life as a Bangladeshi - be it protesting against war criminals or rekindling love on Bangla New Year. He is intrigued when real social dilemmas are portrayed in designed worlds.
Sumit went to the Grad Film Program of New York University as a Tisch Fellow. Currently, he splits his time between New York & Dhaka.
