A Police Sergeant at the time, I was a getting pricing for 2 new Police Harley's at [now] Harley Davidson of Washington, Ft. Washington, MD and was speaking with the [then] owner Howard Whittington. He said " Have I got a deal for you" and took me in the back service area, where six brand new fully dressed out 1980 Police Bikes were sitting. Howard said that a production company had ordered the bikes to take part of a new movie being filmed in and around Washington DC. The movie was called "First Family". He further mentioned that after the filming was completed in Washington, the bikes were being returned to his dealership. So, there came the deal.. If my department was inclined to purchase two of the bikes, at a considerable discount mind you, he [Howard] would get me in to the movie as an extra, portraying what I already was anyway, a Motorcycle Cop. There was some worry on my behalf in regards to a conflict of interest, influencing my department to purchase two bikes with some gratuity attached. The reality of the situation was that, since the purchase price was heavily discounted and no other dealer could have matched the final purchase price, the deal was struck. Making a long story short, I ended up, with 5 other Motorcycle Cops, as extras depicting the Presidential Motorcycle Escort in the filming that took place in the Washington, DC area. When it was all done, 2 of the bikes became a nice addition to our traffic enforcement squad. My 15 minutes of fame, by sheer luck.
