Biography

Spanish filmmaker born in Barcelona and formed in London in the areas of film production, directing, film editing, script writing and cinematography. Since 1990 Carlos Ruiz has worked in the film industry in various capacities as an assistant. In 1996 he produced Rooftop an award wining short drama which won best screenplay at the Internacional Film Festival of Valencia, Spain. Rooftop was distributed at London's Odeon Cinemas. In 1999 Carlos Ruiz directed and produced his first feature-length film: To anyone who can hear me. This film was premiered at the prestigious Internacional Film Festival of Taormina, Italy and participated in festivals such as Edinburgh, Madrid, Sienna, Croatia, Roma, and Figueira da Foz. In 1999 To anyone who can hear me won two major awards at the International Film Festival of Figueira da Foz, Portugal: Grand Prix for best Feature Fiction Film and International Journalists Jury Prize and an honorable mention at the International Film Festival of Famalicâo, Portugal. In 2001 Carlos Ruiz produced Shadows which was entered in competitions at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam (Netherlands) in January 2002. Shadows had its debut at Columbia Tri-Star Preview Theatre in London, England, 2001. In 2004 Carlos Ruiz directs and produces his second feature film: Portrait, an award wining feature documentary which has participated in many International Film Festivals such as Taiwan, Ankara, Rome, Madrid, Mexico, Cadiz, Helsinski, DocLisboa and Tui-PlayDoc. In 2005 Portrait won Best Spanish Feature Film at the International Documentary Film Festival of Madrid, Spain. In the same year the film was awarded an honorable distinction at the International Documentary Film Festival of Tui, Pontevedra, Spain. In 2009 and 2010 Portrait was selected and distributed internationally by Miguel Cervantes' Institute. The program included multiple long term exhibitions in Mexico, Moscú, Shanghai, Stockholm, Beijing, Rome and Casablanca. In 2013 was selected and exhibited word wide by Eurochannel in Europe, Asia and America. In 2009 Carlos Ruiz directed and produced the short fiction drama Roots, which won the main Prix Bracara Augusta Award at the Independent Film Festivalof Braga, Portugal. The film was also awarded Best Short Film at the International Film Festival of Minho. Between the years of 2011 and 2015 Carlos has been directing and producing a great number of documentaries (both short and feature length) which were shown on TV like "A Study of Possibilities", "Serra", "A New Narrative for Europe", "Vertex", "A Dinner that Never Happened", and some documentaries about the work of great contemporary artist such as Rui Chafes, Alberto Carneiro, Susana Solano and Didier Faustino. In 2016 he concluded the production and directing of 13 documentaries for the Portuguese channel RTP2 titled "A Minha Tese" In 2011 he made another short filme entitled Strike which was recently selected to participate at Mexico's International film Festival and in parallel showings in South America, and was shown in RTP2 (Portuguese television channel) in 2014. In 2011 he started directing 10 short films - Making- off and More Design More Industry- both part of the event Art on Chairs, as well as 11 short films for the Public Art Circuit for the city of Paredes. In 2001 Carlos Ruiz finished his master's degree in Film History and Criticism at the East London University. In 2012 he completed his Phd in Science and Technology of the Arts, specializing in Cinema and Audiovisual, by the Portuguese Catholic University of Oporto. His thesis focused the research on the process of narrative construction in documentary, having obtained the rank of Summa cum Laude by unanimity. He has been a professor, at the School of the Arts of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Oporto, since 1999. There, he has coordinated and supervised the production of over 100 fiction and documentary projects. Between 2005 and 2008 was an Adjunct Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, where he also coordinated and supervised the production of short film projects. Between 2001 and 2003 he supervised fiction and documentary Projects in the School of Arts of Porto. Between 1995 and 1999 he taught various subjects in the area of cinema and supervised many fiction and documentary projects in the following institutions: South London Barbican University, Goldsmith University, Kingsway College, City and Islington College and South Thames College. In 2001, in collaboration with the Catholic University, coordinated and supervised the production of ten audiovisual projects commissioned by "Porto 2001: European Capital of Culture". Four of these projects won awards. Carlos Ruiz has participated in conferences in the area of cinema in Portugal, England and Spain.
