Charise Sowells

Biography

Charise Sowells is a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. As an undergraduate student, she won awards for her scripts and received academic honors. Her thesis play was later accepted into the DC Black Theater Festival and adapted into a feature film. Sowells also writes songs which have been featured by SF Weekly, Ukulele Magazine, NPR, and on radio stations both regionally and internationally. She has performed around the country, on television shows, at festivals, and abroad. One of her singles won Song of the Year on an international radio show. Multiple releases of hers made it onto FYC ballots for Grammy nomination consideration. In addition to script writing and songwriting, Sowells freelances in production, acts, produces, and directs. She has run a theater and a music blog, curated music showcases, and composed music for various projects. Her play, An Ocean In My Soul, had a sold out world premiere at the Santa Monica Playhouse in the fall of 2019 and was granted additional performance dates. On top of writing the script, Sowells composed its music and produced the show.
