Russell Spurlock

An experienced and intuitive composer with a wide range of credits covering nearly every genre imaginable, from huge, lush orchestral to gritty rock and roll, from twangy swamp rock to EDM, Russell has not only composed and performed the scored for shows such as the Emmy winning 'Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution' for ABC, but has also composed and performed the title themes for 7 of those same shows. Russell scored the award winning documentary, 'Kelly' in 2012 and has composed for several other scripted projects in the moments between TV projects, short-form commercials and infomercials. With production schedules often demanding huge amounts of music in a very short time, Russell formed a production music house, Whatnot Industries (http://www.whatnotindustries.com/), which has grown to include more than 30 talented composers who work together to create a high quality custom library for any project on an otherwise impossibly tight schedule. As a result, Russell is able to offer a range of composing services, from traditional single-composer to a modern hybrid model utilizing multiple composers and, when desired, existing library cues as well. At HATCH 2015, Russell and world-renowned composer Philip Sheppard visited John Zirkle's music class at a rural school in Big Sky, and while doing an interactive workshop to show kids how they too could be composers, came up with an idea. The HATCH Ostinato Project (http://hatchostinatoproject.com/) was formed to empower students to realize that they can compose music by removing inhibitive barriers, such as the need to play professionally to hear fully realized sounds.The program matches composers and professionals with schools and music classes to allow for collaboration on music creation, resulting in actual music production that can then ultimately generate funding back to that specific music program. Ostinato empowers kids at an critical age to "find their voice" which has been proven to time and time again to enhance their inner self-confidence.
