Biography

Alexandru Stanescu was born in 1982 in Bucharest, Romania. He graduated the National Theater and Film University of Bucharest (U.N.A.T.C.), Film and Multimedia Department. While a Film School undergraduate, he produced, wrote, directed, edited and sound designed Clipa asta minunata (This Enchanted Moment), a short loosely based on a story by Mircea Eliade. During that period, he was awarded for best editing at Tbilisi, Georgia (2005), as well as for best animation shorts (CineMAiubit, Bucharest, 2003, 2004). In 2008, Stanescu directed "Generatia Desenelor Animate", a no-budget short documentary about the Romanian cartoon lovers of the late eighties and nineties, that was showcased at The Romanian Cultural Institute (I.C.R.), alongside an essay about his native city -"Bucurestiul traieste!"- Bucharest Lives!. Another of his auteur shorts -"Vacanta la tara" - Holiday In The Country - was completed later that year. Stanescu's love for film often blends with other passions - fine arts, photography and literature, in various projects. For example, a written study on his grandparents' ethnic history used interviews for a documentary on the same subject (Intoarcerea acasa - 2010, a Romania - Republic of Macedonia co-production). Stanescu became master graduate of The Center for Excellence in the Study of Images (C.E.S.I., Bucharest) in 2009. Since 2008, Alexandru Stanescu has edited numerous documentaries on religious themes for Trinitas TV, Bucharest. Stanescu independently produced and directed various experimental shorts. "Zambetul arhaic" (The Archaic Smile, 2009) is a study on the ancient Greek statues of korai. "Damian" (2009, co-directed by Sorin Ceaus) documents Bucharest Contemporary Art Museum's retrospective of Horia Damian's work, a major Romanian painter with an international career. "No news" (2010), a less-than-2-minutes video collage of TV news, places a sensitive mirror in front of domestic politics, but also in front of the international timeliness, affected by economic depression and natural havoc. "Gran Vía - European Dreaming" is a poetic short depicting the collision between between two discrepant realities, belonging to one united Europe (EU), based on Christianity and Latin legacy. In 2015, Stanescu started a collaboration with Romanian photographer and filmmaker Florin Andreescu, working on shorts and feature films about the natural and cultural beauties of Romania.
