Nic Kelman

Biography

Nic Kelman was born in New York City to a British mother and an American father. His father was documentarian Alfred Kelman. Kelman attended The Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a Bachelor of Science in Brain and Cognitive Science and Minored in Film and Media Studies. After MIT, he received a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Brown University which he attended on full fellowship. Nic's debut novel, "girls: a paean," was published by Little, Brown and Company in 2003 and went on to become a San Francisco Chronicle and New York Journal News Best Book of the Year. A critically acclaimed international bestseller, it has since been translated into more than a dozen languages. It was notably successful in Italy where Fazi Editore was the publisher. Kelman's second book, Video Game Art, was published worldwide in French and English by Assouline in 2006 and was the world's first book on the art history of video games. Kelman's third book, the novel Il Comportamento della Luce was published in 2008 by Fazi Editore. DreamWorks Studios purchased Kelman's first original screenplay, the science fiction epic "Genneris," as a project for Steven Spielberg to direct in 2010. Since then, Kelman has sold original screenplays to the likes of Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures, and Roland Emmerich. In 2015, Kelman also published his fourth book, the illustrated novel, "How To Pass As Human," with Dark Horse Books. From August 2017 to March 2019, Kelman worked at Wizards of the Coast, most recently as Director of Entertainment Development. As well as writing his own projects, he works as a freelance Narrative and IP Development Consultant.
