Biography

Blues guitarist/singer Drink Small was born in Bishopville, SC, in 1933. He first gained recognition as a gospel singer, In his early 20s he joined a South Carolina gospel group called The Spiritualaires as a singer and guitarist. The group gained a following and it wasn't long before they were recording for Vee-Jay Records, eventually becoming one of the most popular groups on the gospel circuit. The Spiritualaires broke up in 1959, and Small changed his musical preference to blues. He recorded some albums for Sharp Records and Southland Records, and later started his own company, Bishopville Records, and recorded some more albums for that label. He was at one time a member of the South Carolina Arts Commission.
