Matt was a distance runner at York high school in Bensenville, Illinois. He was a three-time top-20 state finisher (seventh - 2005, second - '04, 20th - '03). Finished fourth in the 2004 Nike Team Nationals to earn Foot Locker invitation, and added a 12th-place finish in 2005, while his team won and took second, respectively. State track placer as a senior (1,600 meters, eighth, 4:16.11) and junior (1,600 meters, second, 4:15.42; 4x800 meter relay, first, 7:51.59). Ran on winning distance medley relay in the 2006 Nike Outdoor Nationals. Ran for the University of Oregon track and cross country team in college with personal bests of 3:50.56 for 1500m (Pre Classic 'B' Section, Eugene, Ore., 6/9/07), and 1:52.19 for 800m (Oregon Twilight, Eugene, Ore. 5/9/09). Graduated with a degree in Digital Arts. He was featured in Matthew Arnold's acclaimed documentary, The Long Green Line.
