Amaryllis Knight

Biography

Amaryllis Knight is a Los Angeles-based furniture, interior, and landscape designer. Born and raised in London, Amaryllis became interested in design at an early age. Inspired by the award-winning work of her mother, architect and designer Sabiha Rumani Malik, Amaryllis abandoned formal education to study on her own, learning through observation and practice. Drawn to adventure and discovery, Amaryllis has traveled extensively, seeking out vernacular architecture, art, music, and history, all of which inform her work. Amaryllis's first interior design project was at Riverside One in London in 1998. Her first project in Los Angeles was a complete 2002 renovation of a Queens Road residence. Since then, Knight has worked as principal interior architect and designer, developing custom made furniture and landscape schemes independently and in tandem with her interiors. In 2012, she founded Altai, a design consultancy and shop, opening on January 11, 2013. With Altai, Amaryllis continues her furniture, interior, and landscape design work while expanding into a design consultancy at large and creating a platform for a broader array of design and art objects. Amaryllis's practice involves gaining a holistic view of a client's needs and tastes before embarking on a detailed design process, envisioning a distilled reflection of a client's personal aesthetic. Constructing microcosms within an overall space, Amaryllis seeks to create a balance between nature and structure. Her goal is to create heirloom objects and deeply felt spaces with an emphasis on simplicity and comfort.
