Born in Chicago, IL, in 1958, blues guitarist Lurrie Bell is the son of harmonica player Carey Bell. His father's band, the Carey Bell Blues Band, often rehearsed in the family's apartment, and Lurrie grew up among music and musicians. He taught himself how to play the guitar, and eventually played with his father's band in a couple of club performances. In 1977 he, Freddie Dixon (son of Willie Dixon) and harp player Billy Branch formed Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues.
Bell left the band in 1982, and spent the rest of the decade as a session musician and touring with KoKo Taylor's band. In 1984 he recorded an album with his father, "Son of a Gun". He continues to play and record.
