Roger was born the oldest of 3 children to Carrie and Roger Jenkins, Sr. in Jenkinsville, SC. He left Bethune Cookman College after his sophomore year to pursue his dream of becoming a singer in Hollywood. In Hollywood he joined the Mike Curb congregation where he was able to backup Sammie Davis Jr, play in the movie Magic of Lassie, sing at the white house, and perform in the musical Hare. Jenkins married his first wife Karen and they had three children, Camille, Jeanette, and Roger III. After a divorce Jenkins moved back to his home state of South Carolina where he met his current wife Shirlan. After moving in with her and her daughter Donyale the two were married and a year later Jenkins fathered Christopher. Jenkins opened a restaurant, Mister J's Cafe in 2002. The restaurant thrived until Jenkins's retirement in 2011.
