Biography

As President of the NBA G League, Shareef Abdur-Rahim is responsible for all aspects of the league's business and basketball operations, including its continued expansion with 28 NBA franchises having a direct affiliation with an NBA G League team. Abdur-Rahim played a pivotal leadership role in the international expansion of the league with the addition of the Mexico City Capitanes in 2019. During his tenure, Abdur-Rahim has championed the league's Professional Path, which created NBA G League Ignite, an NBA Draft-preparatory team for elite players which he oversees. Under his guidance, the NBA G League successfully completed the 2020-21 single-site season during the coronavirus pandemic. Abdur-Rahim began working for the NBA in 2016, spending two years in the league's operations department before assuming his current role. Prior to joining the league office, Abdur-Rahim spent five years with the Sacramento Kings as an assistant general manager and assistant coach. He also served as general manager of the NBA G League's Reno Bighorns (now known as the Stockton Kings) during the 2013-14 season. The third overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft, Abdur-Rahim was named an NBA All-Star with the Atlanta Hawks in 2002 and earned a gold medal with USA Basketball at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. During his 12-season NBA career, Abdur-Rahim averaged 18.1 points per game. Abdur-Rahim earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley and an MBA from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. He resides in New Jersey with his wife Delicia, daughter Samiyah and son Jabri.
