Biography

A Brooklyn-based actor and writer, Ben has appeared on and off Broadway, on Netflix and The History Channel, and in award-winning features and shorts. Making his Broadway debut in June 2019 in Heidi Schreck's Tony-nominated What The Constitution Means To Me, Ben performed to packed houses as a patriarchal legionnaire to Heidi's young feminist. Other stage credits include the first national tours of Bess Wohl's Small Mouth Sounds (dir. Tony-winner Rachel Chavkin) and Rick Elice's Peter and the Starcatcher (dir. Tony-nominee Alex Timers and Tony-winner Roger Rees), as well as world premieres by Tony Award-winners Itamar Moses and Christopher Durang. His film and TV work includes Shonda Rhimes' Inventing Anna (Netflix) and the celebrated short Hair Wolf (Short Film Jury Award, Sundance). As a co-artistic director of The Assembly, which The New York Times dubbed "a cutting-edge young theater collective," Ben has premiered six original productions. He's co-writing an original musical for the company, In Corpo, that's slated to premiere in 2022. The Times also praised three COVID-era projects that Ben has helmed: the Red Bull premiere of his original play Outside Time, Without Extension (starring William Jackson Harper and Ali Ahn), his "suave voice work, paired with the virtual-reality puppetry" of Krista Knight and Barry Brinegar in the animated miniseries Crush, and his writing and performance in the immersive quarantine experience KlaxAlterian Sequester (www.klaxalteria.com). From 2005 through 2009, he performed throughout Canada and Europe with experimental projects he'd co-created with Temporary Distortion. Ben is a member of The Actors Center, and studied for six years with Emmy Award-winning director Gene Lasko and Tony Award-winning actor Reed Birney. He's also an accomplished singer, having performed leading roles in Parade, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Company, as well as the title role in Sweeney Todd, and studied vocal performance professionally for several years. Ben grew up in Lexington, Virginia and graduated from Princeton University with a B.A. in Dramatic Literature. www.benbeckley.com
