Darrell Michael Smith (born June 22,1971) is an American actor, producer and entrepreneur. He is an actor who identifies with characters defined by their grace, dignity, humanity, and inner strength. Smith moved to New York City and started his career by studying at The Negro Ensemble Company performing scene work from great playwrights such as Lorianne Hansberry's "A Raisin In A Sun," August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson" and "Fences" to name a few. Smith once quoted that, "An actor only learns how to act in theatre." Taking initiative, he then went to further study at workshops at Stella Adler, and study the works of Shakespeare, Eugene O'Neil's "The Iceman Cometh," Arthur Miller's "The Death Of A Salesman" and many more. He appeared in many off-Broadway productions through out the country and continued to work the craft. His breakthrough TV guest spot was on "The King Of Queens" which later led an appearances on the TV series JAG and re-occurring appearances on HBO'S hit crime drama "The Wire." Smith has also produced films. The first film he produced was a film written by Justin Bartha (National Treasure, Failure To Launch , The Hangover Franchise) called "Highs & Lows." The film went on to do well at the Slamdance Film Festival and opened up unprecedented doors for his friend Justin Bartha's film career as anticipated. Smith quoted: "This was one of the craziest projects I have ever done but fun." He also produced, wrote, directed and marketed a film with Music Executive Kenny Burns (Former President of Roc-A-Fella Records, Jay -Z, Kanye West, Radio Host, and discovered rapper Wale) called "Meeting Mr Kenny." The film project went on to be featured at The Heinkin Film Festival. Darrell Smith then produced, wrote, and directed his own personal film called "One More Chance" which he also played the lead and that film project went on to get nominated for "Best Movie " at The Gotham Short Film Festival and got well noticed by all which HBO called and offered Smith a role on " The Wire." Smith has also made a guest TV spot on the TV Show "Dr.OZ" on to talk about how to identify breast cancer in woman with Dr. Oz.
