Born in Wisconsin, Studstrup studied journalism (University of Oregon), film (University of California - Santa Cruz) and writing (University of Tulsa). He is a graduate of the creative writing program at Brown.
Studstrup's first edit was Wang Dang, for writer/director Tom Noonan. In an interview about film editing, Studstrup said he appreciates editor Sidney Levin's likening of film editing to an Italian mosaic mural and editing decisions to the little tessera -- the individual stones -- that are placed in a large field. Ten editors, says Levin, will edit the same scene with the same fundamental construction. But each will place a little stone here or there that will color the entire scene.
When he's not writing, editing or traveling, he teaches film editing in New York City. Studstrup's editing partner and wife is the documentary film editor Jody Jorgensen.
