Biography

Igael Tumarkin is an Israeli sculptor, painter, actor, art director, and set designer. He was born in Dresden, Germany in 1933 to a German Jewish mother, Berta Gurevitch, and a German Christian father, Martin Hellberg, who was a theater actor and director. At the age of two, he immigrated to Israel with his mother and stepfather, Herzl Tumarkin, who formally adopted him. Known primarily for his autonomous sculptures and commemorative public works, such "Holocaust and Revival" (often also translated as "Holocaust and Resurrection") in Rabin Square, Tel Aviv, he was awarded the Israel Prize for Sculpture in 2004.
