Michael Hsu Rosen

Michael Hsu Rosen is an American actor, dancer, and singer. He was born and raised in New York City. When he was seventeen years old he made his Broadway debut as Chino in the 2009 revival of West Side Story directed by Arthur Laurents. He then enrolled as an undergraduate at Yale University, but withdrew early to return to the stage in 2013, starring opposite Tony Award winner Priscilla Lopez in the world premiere of Matthew Lopez's Somewhere at Hartford Stage and then later that year as Nicholas Magallanes in the world premiere of Richard Nelson's Nikolai and the Others directed by David Cromer at Lincoln Center Theater. His other theater credits include the 2014 Broadway revival of Leonard Bernstein's On the Town directed by John Rando, Colman Domingo's Dot (2016) at the Vineyard Theatre directed by Susan Stroman, and Do I Hear a Waltz? (2016) directed by Evan Cabnet at City Center Encores. In 2016 Rosen played Jimmy opposite Jonathan Groff in Looking: The Movie on HBO directed by Andrew Haigh. In 2017 Rosen was cast opposite Michael Urie and Academy Award winner Mercedes Ruehl as Arnold's lovable, younger boyfriend, Alan, in the first ever NY revival of Harvey Fierstein's landmark play, Torch Song Trilogy. The critically acclaimed production, which featured a newly revised version of the play edited by Fierstein and re-titled simply Torch Song, premiered Off Broadway at Second Stage Theatre. In October 2018, Torch Song transferred to the Hayes Theater on Broadway where it had its final performance on Sunday January 6, 2019. In 2019 Rosen starred in Lavender, a short LGBT romantic drama film, written and directed by Matthew Puccini. It premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, where it was then acquired by Fox Searchlight Pictures for an Academy Award-qualifying theatrical run attached to select screenings of The Aftermath. The film then went on to play at the 2019 SXSW Festival, Palm Springs International ShortFest, Outfest Los Angeles, New Orleans Film Festival, NFFTY and the Provincetown International Film Festival, where it won the Here Media Award for Best Queer Short Film. In 2019 Rosen also appeared in a recurring role as Laurent Lyonne on Netflix's Jessica Jones and in the film After Class, directed by Daniel Schecter, starring Justin Long, Fran Drescher, Richard Schiff and Kate Berlant, which premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival under the title Safe Spaces. On August 6th, 2019, Deadline reported that Netflix had given a 10-episode order to Tiny Pretty Things, an hour-long drama series based on the book by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton, from writer Michael MacLennan, Insurrection Media, Mojo Films and Peacock Alley. The streaming network announced that Rosen would join the cast as series regular Nabil Limyadi with shooting underway in Toronto for a 2020 premiere. In 2020 Rosen starred opposite Bill Camp in episode 4 ("New York, New York") of Hulu's horror anthology series Monsterland created and produced by Mary Laws with Babak Anvari, Lucan Toh and Annapurna Television attached as producers.
