Dave Rochlen

Biography

Dave Rochlen was a World-class surfer, U.S. Marine in World WWII, famous Santa Monica lifeguard, and the Stunt Diver who portrayed Captain Nemo in Walt Disney's 1954 motion picture version of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. He was featured in Life magazine three times; was a focal character in Disney's Operation Undersea TV documentary; starred in Bruce Brown's surfing documentary "America's Newest Sport" in 1962; invented the distinctive surf wear known as "Jams" and founded Surf Line Hawaii in 1964. He received the Ernst & Young Hawaii Entrepreneur Award in 1998 for his achievements in business. Dave passed away from pancreatic cancer at age 78 in 2003. In 2010 he was posthumously inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame for his contributions to the sport. He is survived by family who continue the company under the name Jams World, led by son Pua Rochlen of Hawaii.
