Kathy Cortez was born in the Bronx, but grew up in Middletown, New York. She graduated from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, where she majored in English and Women's Studies. She moved to New York City, where she began a career in publishing during the day, and performed in various off-off-Broadway productions at night. Eventually, with the support of her husband and family, Kathy left her day job to pursue work full-time as an actress.
Favorite stage productions include "The A-Train (Re) Plays" (Playwrights Horizons), "The Laramie Project" (Gallery Players), where she played several roles, including Rebecca Hiliker and Reggie Fluty, and "The Undoing of Berta" (Teatro La Tea), as Grace (a role written with her in mind by acclaimed Sundance Film Festival writer and director Cyn Canel-Rossi).
Television roles include investigator Kathy Perales in "Parco P.I.," appearances as the State Nurse Rivera on "As the World Turns," and the recurring role of Carmen on both "All My Children" and "One Life to Live." You can also see Kathy in the lead role of Ana in Miles Kahn's "Fly Trap" (Winner, Best Short Film, SlamDunk Film Festival 2001).
