Never comfortable in front of the camera, Chris left Blue Peter after only 21 months. He became a journalist. As a war correspondent in Beirut, Lebanon he disappeared for 18 days. In 1995 in the Balkans working for ITN as a journalist for Channel 4, he was brutally beaten up by Serb civilians protesting over Kosovan Albanians.
