Michael Spencer began his career as a cameraman in 1941 with the National Film Board of Canada, becoming a producer in 1945. He was appointed Executive Director of the Canadian Film Development Corporation (precursor of Telefilm Canada), occupying the post from 1968 to 1978. He oversaw the production of such films as Orderers (1974) (directed by Michel Brault), and The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974) (directed by Ted Kotcheff).
