Biography

Giovanni Silvestrini, Venetian by birth, attended the Ermanno Olmi "Ipotesi Cinema" film school, where his assignments including working on Italian public broadcasting (RAI) productions as assistant director and on other major studio productions filmed in Venice and the Veneto region. At the request of renowned Venetian actor Alessandro Bressanello, Giovanni worked as assistant casting director in the pre-production phase of the film In Love and War (1996), and then, during the filming itself, was the assistant director to Oscar-winning filmmaker Sir Richard Attenborough. On set was the celebrated, Oscar-nominated cinematographer, Roger Pratt, known for his collaborations with Terry Gilliam, and Giovanni had the great fortune to watch the master at work. The following year he was chosen to be the assistant director for the award-winning film, The Wings of the Dove (1997), which was nominated for four Oscars. During filming, he worked closely alongside Helena Bonham Carter and another legendary cinematographer, Eduardo Serra, both of whom would receive their first Oscar nominations for this film. In subsequent years, Giovanni has worked on various film and television productions, such as Mozart in the Jungle (2014), Leonardo: A Dream of Flight (1996), Ajala, M. (2017) and numerous shorts, videos, and commercials.
