Halldis Moren Vesaas

Biography

Daughter of writer Sven Moren, she made her debut in 1929, and quickly established herself as the leading female Norwegian writer of her generation. She was an all-round writer, equally familiar to poetry, drama, short stories and children's books. In addition to her own production, she was often used as a translater: "Hamlet" and "Phaedra" are amongst the 52 classical dramas she translated from their native languages into norwegian. Her career would span nearly 70 years. She died in 1995, and was given a state funeral. She's buried in Vinje, Telemark, side by side with her husband Tarjei Vesaas.
