Between 1967 and 1968 he was a Marine Combat Correspondent in Vietnam with the 1st Maride Division ISO, along with wartime buddies Gustav Hasford (author of "The Short Timers", the novel wich inspired Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket"), Bob Bayer (now editor of the LA Times) and Dale Daye (adviser of several higly succesful movies like "Saving Private Ryan" and "Platoon")
Hasford included him in "Short Timers" as the "T.H.E." Rock.
