Joel Rane was born in Los Angeles and raised in Burbank, California, and lived in the area except for his undergraduate years in Berkeley, California, where he studied the ancient Greek art of Rhetoric. After studying film and writing, he received a Master's degree in writing from USC in 1989, the same year he edited four video features for the artist Raymond Pettibon. Rane later became a librarian and author. In 2007 his book "Scream at the Librarian", a collection of vignettes illustrated by Pettibon and Cristin Sullivan, was published by Booklyn in New York.
