Biography

Jazz composer ("I Remember Clifford", for the late jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown), conductor, saxophonist and arranger, educated at Howard University. He was a saxophonist in the orchestras of Bull Moose Jackson, Tadd Dameron, Lionel Hampton, Johnny Hodges, Earl Bostic, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey, then formed his own quartet in 1959, then formed "The Jazztet" with Art Farmer. He has made many recordings. Joining ASCAP in 1958, his other popular-song and instrumental compositions include "Stablemates", "Whisper Not", "Killer Joe", "Five Spot After Dark", and "Fair Weather".
