David attended Iowa State University and studied film and television. While there, he produced, directed, shot and edited a documentary called "Donna Reed: Reflections of a Wonder Life" This documentary won the best Student production award at the "Movies to Go Iowa Film Awards" in 1993.
After college in 1992, David worked at Iowa Public Television working as a camera operator, Master control operator and editor.
In 1994 he attended the 'Steadicam Operators Association' master workshop and was taught Steadicam by the inventor, Garrett Brown and by Lead instructors Jerry Holway and Andrew Casey.
In 1996, David attended the International Film and Television Workshops in Rockport, Maine.
In 1998 he left Iowa Public TV to operate Steadicam full time on a home renovation show for PBS and various production companies.
In 2002 David became a member of the International Cinematographer's Guild Local 600 and in that same year co-founded the Steadicam Guild with Steadicam operator Dan Kneece.
In 2006 he became a member of the Society of Camera Operators. Between 2007 to 2011 he served on the Board of Governors for the Society of Camera Operators.
In July of 2010 David created the Steadicam Guild Life Achievement Awards. He also designed the award. The first SG LAA went to Co founder Dan Kneece in 2011.
In 2010 David created the Stabilizer Gear Expo where Manufacturers from the leading body-worn camera stabilizers and stabilizer accessories, come together in one place to demo their products to film and video industry professionals.
