Biography

Vivacious Roxie Joynes was one of many sparkling personalities in show business in the 1940's. One of her greatest achievements was appearing in the soundies in the 1940's, these were known as the first music videos, which featured top singers, bands, dancing girls, and beauties. The soundies with an African American cast were the highlight of the soundies, showcasing the culture, dance, and music of black entertainment of the time. Roxie was one of the women who contributed her beauty and charm to soundies and Roxie's good looks, sex appeal, and pizzazz stole many scenes and through these films, her presence will live on forever. She also appeared in films with legendary Louis Jordan, "Reet, Petite, and Gone" and "Caldonia." She also appeared on Broadway in "Dream With Music" and she also modeled. Roxie is probably better known as the wife of baseball legend Roy Campanella, because of her husband, Roxie was a tireless advocate for victims of spinal cord injury. She spent the remaining of her life involved with helping physically impaired people and encouraging them. Roxie and Roy started the Roy and Roxie Campanella Foundation which gives scholarships to aspiring students of physical therapy to help them pursue their dreams.
