A one year break to design a Musical for friend Glen Goei in Singapore turned into a seven years making films & lecturing all over SE Asia from 2010 to 2017 Ian cut his teeth in the business on everything and anything art & design he came across. He is passionate about architecture and did a spell in an architects office, a spell as a technical illustrator for BNFL & British Areospace. And an award winning Silversmith and Jeweller. When the film industry invited him in he worked his way through and up the various sub depts of Art as model maker (Tim Burton's Batman sets), Animatronic designer, set designer, props maker, set dresser, concept artist, storyboard artist, on set art director, supervising art director and Production Designer for Roger Corman. Corman through everything and anything at him and he devour the challenges with gusto! Nowadays he can afford to be a little picky with this projects and only joined Wolf Kroeger on Spyglass' "Reign of Fire" because he had the opportunity to design and build a Medieval Castle. Medieval history and this period's architecture is a passion in Bailie's life and his fortress features a keep 30m high and a footprint the size of 20 football pitches. Bashing up and destroying parts of Tangiers, Morocco to look like Beirut, Lebananon 1982 was also an attractive proposition so he joined producer Steve Saeta, Director Brad Anderson on Beirut written by Tony Gilroy's. Mr Saeta asked Ian if he would handle the Moroccan leg of Lionsgate's John Wick III Parabellum. He had a chat with Production Designer Kevin Kavanaugh and the rest is now award winning history. His peers at the British Film Designers Guild (BFDG) in February 2020 voted John Wick Parabellum best design & art direction. More recently Ian has designed his first Rom-com, the much anticipated Christmas Prince 3 for Netflix. Then in the middle of last year Neil Marshall came calling. The Reckoning had had a couple of false starts but was about to prep in Hungary. A huge fan on Neil's work and a medieval-period set script what was not-to-like? So up to date with Covid-19 he has just had to take a hiatus from Morocco (again) and John William McDonagh's latest project The Forgiven starring Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain. The most important part of the filming still to be shot expectations to pick up the last week of photography are high as soon as borders are open again and everyone is safe. Back story ... Ian has a Bachelor of Arts with Honours Degree in 3-Dimensional Design from Hornsey and Manchester Schools of Art. He began his career as a Sculptor, Goldsmith and jewelry designer. Ian has also won awards and competitions in this field with his work exhibited at the prestigious Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in London. A one year break to design a Musical Into The Woods for friend Glen Goei in Singapore turned into a seven years making films & lecturing all over SE Asia from 2010 to 2017. This period included film projects Hitman Agent 47 for Fox & Equals for Scott Free as well as numerous local films like Deadmine, HBO Asia's first feature. "The money was extremely tight and time was at a premium so we sculpted some of my sets in wire and paper. All subterranean sets and I knew what I could get away with, most of the time, as I had to start the building and painting myself to show my crew who had never made a film before how to do it."
Ian's passion in film and problem solving on tight budgets partners very well with his passion for travel and interacting with other cultures. All over the UK & Ireland, France, Spain, Czech Republic, USA, Equador, Malaysia, The Middle East (Abu Dhabi), Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia. Morocco, Hungary, Romania.
