Billy Brow

Biography

He told stories of auditioning to work with Rin Tin Tin, when many of the other boys were frightened by the dog. His acting career was solely driven by his adoptive mother, Marian Knight Brow, however, and when she died in his teen years, Bill finished growing up with his older, adoptive brother, Dix Brow. As William Hooker Brow, he went on to earn three graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin, including a PhD in Contemporary Portuguese Literature. He was fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese, and spent much of his career teaching Spanish at various schools across the country. In his final days, he returned to Davis, California, where he and his wife, Ellen Gertrude Hodges, had first met as undergraduates. Some of his papers are held in the University Archives of the University of Kansas, in the Kenneth Spencer Research Library. He was the translator of "One Day of Life," by Salvadoran author Manlio Argueta, and a lifelong pacifist and Quaker. He died February 15, 2017, in Davis, California, leaving his widow, three children, and eight grand-children.
