Biography

Composer ("Blue Prelude", "Jealousy", "Blue Flame", "At the Woodchoppers Ball", "Blue Evening"), arranger, tuba player, educated at Hendrix College. He played tuba in the Isham Jones and Sam Katz bands, and others. In 1936, he helped form the Woody Herman Orchestra. Joining ASCAP in 1939, his chief collaborators were Gordon Jenkins, Gene Gifford, and Leo Corday. Other compositions include "Out of Space", "Blue Lament", "New Orleans Twist", "The Cobra and the Flute", "Is Love That Way?", "Blues Upstairs and Downstairs", "Gotta Get to St. Joe", "Be Not Discouraged", "Ain't It Just Too Bad?" and "Indian Boogie Woogie".
