Ala Ghawas

Biography

Ala Ghawas is an independent singer, songwriter, musician and producer from Bahrain, considered by many as one of Bahrain's most important artists of his generation. With his haunting lyrics and raspy voice backed with his acoustic guitar and piano, Ghawas produced a compelling body of work that illustrates the influences of his life in the form of songs. Drawing inspirations from poets and songwriting masters like 'Bob Dylan' and 'Leonard Cohen', as well as rock legends 'Pink Floyd' and his idols 'Jackson Browne' and 'Jeff Buckley'. Ghawas has been quite active in the Bahraini music scene since the release of his debut EP, "Hums", back in 2007. The release was received positively and then followed by another two critically acclaimed EPs, "Whispers" in 2008 and "Screams" in 2009. Starting 2011, Ghawas spent almost three years working on his debut LP, "Armor", featuring ten new songs written and produced by Ghawas. The LP was the product of Ghawas' partnership with Bahrain's most popular band, 'Likwid'. The album was released in November 2013 and has been receiving incredibly positive reviews from the media of the entire gulf region ever since. After the release of Armor, the partnership between Ala Ghawas and Likwid took more adventurous grounds with a successful series of live performances in Bahrain and the gulf region. Later in 2015, Ghawas invited the band to record and film a live concert and a documentary at his house and called it "Live from Allston". Ala named his house "Allston" honoring the small town in the city of Boston where he used to live in 2006 and 2007. The film was co-produced and directed by Bahraini filmmaker 'Saleh Nass'.
