Captain Gordon Hume Smith, of Toronto, Canada, fought in the Battle of the Somme in World War I. During that battle, the back of one of his hands was torn off by a German shell. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre. His only known film appearance was in "The Wonderful Thing" with Norma Talmadge. After completing the film, he returned to Toronto to have an operation on his hand. He was to be given a bigger role in another Talmadge production, but that apparently did not happen.
