Richard Courchene was born on October 19, 1965. His dad George was a carpenter and his mom, Mary was an educator. He is an Ojibway Indian from the Sagkeeng First Nation reserve in Manitoba, Canada where he lived until the age of 6. Richard grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He began his career in writing with the Uniter newspaper at the University of Winnipeg in the 1980s and eventually went on to Macleans Magazine in the 1990s. Richard studied screenwriting at Vancouver Film School in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
