Jon Caine

Biography

Jon Arthur Caine was born on January 16, 1946 in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) to Arthur Caine, a physician in the British Army who was assisting with the countless wounded after the defeat of the Nazis, and Alzbeta Cerna, a Czech teacher and volunteer nurse. Alzbeta and Arthur met in 1945 before the end of the war and were married only a few weeks before Jon was born. The new family left Prague for the United Kingdom shortly after the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia won the 1946 elections. Caine was a fan of monster movies from an early age, especially the ones from Hammer Films and loved reading horror fiction, including whatever old copies of horror comics he could get his hands on from E.C. Comics. Caine eventually showed a proclivity for writing horror stories of his own and making short films in high school, which his family assumed was just a phase. When he eventually graduated in 1964, his parents were disappointed to learn of his plans to attend the London Film School, not yet realizing their son was destined to be a horror film icon. -1968- In March 1968, only a couple of months after his 22nd birthday, Caine finished his directorial debut, entitled The Spawn, which told the story of a middle aged nun who is seduced and impregnated by a mysterious young man, who turns out to actually be the devil himself. While the film got a limited theatrical release and was only a moderate financial success, it immediately developed a cult following. This led Caine to continue on with his career as a film director, gaining more and more popularity with his films The Brave Vampire Slayers (1970), Black Sun (1972), Deep End (1974) and Blood Engines (1976). -1979- In early 1979 Jon Caine was in the news for a different reason other than one of his films. While his 6th film SamHain had debuted in October of 1978 and was a box office success, Caine found himself a suspect in the mysterious deaths of his wife, actress Veronica Hart, and actor Anthony Walker, who both had starred in the film. Hart and Caine had met on the set of his earlier film Black Sun (1972) and she went on to appear in two more of his films before SamHain. Allegedly Hart and Walker had secretly began an affair during the shooting of the film and were found dead months after its release in the same manner in which their characters died on screen, leading some to believe Caine was somehow involved. No charges were ever filed against the filmmaker, for there was only speculation and no real evidence. -1984- Caine continued to make films, but would ultimately reach a legendary status in the annals of horror history and as a filmmaker with the release of the 1984 zombie blockbuster Post Mortem. The success of the film would spawn two sequels; Post Mortem II: Evolution (1989) and Post Mortem III: Apocalypse (1995) which were both extremely successful and well received by the fans. -The 2000's- Caine continued making films into the new millennium, maintaining his status as the most successful horror director of all time and the "infamous master of gore", a nickname dubbed by the fans. After the success of his supernatural horror / action film Soul Chasers (2012), Caine took a hiatus from the business for a few years, until it was announced just recently that he would be producing and appearing in a new reality game show entitled "The Horror Show". The point of this new show is to find the next great horror film director and Caine's production company Titan Pictures is even offering a cash prize and a one picture deal. In his personal life Caine has never remarried and has fathered no children. He has been described as a bit of a brooding figure and tries to keep out of the spotlight of the media and Hollywood when ever possible. The only person that seems to have a close relationship with the director is his longtime manager Midian Price.
