Biography

Squadron Leader Henry Melvin 'Dinghy' Young, born in Liverpool, was a Royal Air Force Volunteer Resrve Bombere Command pilot who was part of the winning crew of the 1938 Oxford Vs. Cambridge Boat Race, the first televised event in the history of the Oxford Vs. Cambridge Boat Race. Henry earnt the nickname 'Dinghy' after he was shot down twice in World War Two, whilst over the sea and surviving both times in inflatable dinghies. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) on the 9th May 1941 and the Bar to the Distinguished Flying Cross on the 18th September 1942. Henry was reportedly killed by Nazi gunners at Castricum-aan-Zee on the early morning of the 17th May 1943, whilst on a team return journey, having just attacked German dams in the Ruhr Valley.
