Nic Alexander was born in Madison, Wisconsin, to his parents Nancy and Steven. He is mainly of German, Swiss, and Irish descent. His mother was an artist and a teacher. His father was an abusive alcoholic who failed to hold down a job, which resulted in the family needing to move quite often. His father eventually left the family when Alexander was seven. His loving mother and her parents, William and Ellen, were the main source of Alexander's upbringing.
Alexander was an only child, and, because of the frequent moves, was familiar with being the new kid in school and often had to make new friends. He spent a lot of time by himself and discovered writing at a young age. Alexander constantly drafted up stories and skits and performed them for his family. He began acting in high school, but was not a part of any shows his senior year due to artistic differences with the school's drama teacher. He moved to Minneapolis after high school, and performed his own material in local bars and venues.
In 2012, Alexander started his production company, Phantom Moth Productions. He wrote, directed, and starred in several films over the next four years, collaborating with cinematographer Evan Parquette.
