Mr. Luis Fernandez has been licensed to practice law in Florida since 1979. After earning his law degree from the University of Florida, Mr. Fernandez worked as a public defender in Gainsville. He later returned to Miami to open up his firm with his father, Luis Fernandez-Caubi. Together with his father, their firm led a coalition of law firms in representing the elderly in the precedent setting Meek v. Martinez lawsuit to entitle the elderly in South Florida to receive their proportionate share of benefits from the government. In addition, their firm advocated for human rights in the United Nations, which eventually led to the condemnation of Cuba for its human rights abuses. His daughter, Anna Fernandez Brown, is the newest member of his firm.
Recently, Mr. Fernandez, along with attorneys Willy Allen, Santiago Alpizar, and Ricardo Martinez-Cid, and a Miami-based television station, launched the campaign titled "Cuba, Repression ID," to identify and publicly name Cuban security agents and pro-government militants who attack dissidents on the island. This project solicits public support from the Cuban exile community in the United States and also from people inside Cuba to identify, through photographs and film footage, individuals who beat and/or harass unarmed critics of Cuba's communist government.
In his free time, Mr. Fernandez is the host of the WLRN Channel 17 TV program "Ante Usted", which covers legal topics, discussed in Spanish. Mr. Fernandez also makes regular TV appearances on America Teve's "A Mano Limpia" and TV Marti Noticias, giving his legal opinions on current events.
