Julia Bickerstaff

Biography

I learnt my skills of glass work at Oldham Claudegen in 1987 at its height producing all signage, Petroliana, high street signs and brewery signage with associated signage too. I also made neon for signs at Piccadilly Circus. This of cause is no more and in 2011 was replaced by a giant LED screen for advertising. These days I make bespoke neon commissions and also maintenance as well as my own pieces. I studied art at Leeds College of Art in the 80s and also hold a degree in Engineering. My work has been exhibited world wide, from the Glass Art Society Conference in Seattle USA to the National Glass Museum Denmark. I have work resident at a number of galleries in the UK and is view-able at online galleries. I have appeared on television and radio displaying and talking about what I do and my talents with glass and knowledge of neon. My neon has been used in films & TV from horror movies to day time entertainment TV shows. I am on a personal mission to spread an understanding of why we should not leave craft skills behind and nourish our minds with hands on making.
