Johanan Ruelas

Johanan Ruelas was born in Guadalajara, Mexico on April 26th 1999, the third of 4, his parents Margarita Rico (Kindergarten teacher) and Guillermo Ruelas (Taxi Driver) both originally from Guadalajara. Johanan started karate at the age of 9, and graduated with the black belt in Shotokan when he turned 13, the next year he won the nationals and became one of the best karate competitors in Mexico, He was part of the Mexican team that competed in the Junior Pan American Championship where he won the third place, positioning him as one of the best in the continent. He retired from Karate when he turned 17, at a really young age, because of the lack of support from the Mexican government to the elite athletes. "There were times that I had to sing in restaurants and beg for money, so I could afford my next competition." - He stated.
