Xiao Lu, born April 16th 1962 in Hangzhou, is a Chinese artist who works with performance, installation art and video art. She gained fame by shooting her own installation, "Dialogue", at the opening of the China Avant-garde exhibition in 1989. When the Tiananmen Square massacre occurred four months later, her actions were heavily politicized, referred to as "the first gunshots of Tiananmen". After a period of silence, Xiao returned to Beijing in 2003 and since then has produced works with highly personal as well as strong socio-political messages. In 2018 she created a short film of the installation/performance "Coil".
