Against a backdrop of lynching and Jim Crow segregation in the U.S., Colonel Allensworth and 14 black families charter the town of Allensworth in Tulare County, California. The town grows to a population of 300 before water shortages and political subterfuge bring it to the edge of extinction during the 1950s. Then one of the former pioneers starts a movement to reconstruct the town. Today it has become a rallying point for African Americans nationwide.
