The Abbey of Monte Cassino remained untouched for most of World War II. The civilians living in the shadow of the Abbey saw it as a beacon of light in desperately dark times. In 1944, with allied causalities reaching 55 thousand, the sacred Abbey was sacrificed. Allied bombers leveled the Abbey reducing it to rubble. Inadvertently strengthening the Germans' position within the debris of the fallen Abbey. The civilians that bore witness to the bombardment had lost all hope, as the light on the mountain was snuffed out. Every day became a struggle to stay alive, until a new hope was born, as Canada offered the masses a new beginning.
